This article is part of a series of letters we send to Royal Servants students each spring. The letters are designed to encourage them and help them continue forward as they prepare for their upcoming mission trip. They are also posted here in the hope they might help others too.
At this time of year we see three types of students applying for Royal Servants mission trips. First, those who are holding onto their applications, but still haven’t sent them in. Second, those who have sent in their applications, but for one reason or another, are now having second thoughts. And third, those who are surging ahead and raising support.
If you find yourself in the first or second category, don’t feel bad. I want to encourage you not to let the fear of raising support, pressure of time commitments, or other worries get in the way of what God has for you. Satan always enjoys giving you great sounding reasons not to trust God. Let me share a story:
A friend who had gone on Royal Servants shared his trip one Sunday. Later, my mom asked me if I had thought about going, but I told her, ‘I don’t want to go! I need to work all summer so I can have money for college next year’… And so it began.
I ended up applying for Amsterdam because it was the shortest and cheapest trip. When it was canceled, Tom, the director, convinced me to go to China, which was one of the longest and most expensive trips. Ha-ha God, ha-ha.
It turned out to be the best choice I had made up to that point in my life. My experience in China was phenomenal! And having the Amsterdam trip canceled was the best thing in my life—because it strengthened my faith in God. He not only provided the money for the trip, but also for college after I returned home!
My faith in God grew exponentially that summer, and while I don’t believe God has called me to be a full-time missionary, my summer with Royal Servants has made me want to maybe lead short-term summer mission trips like Royal Servants does throughout the rest of my life.
If you are questioning whether you have enough time to get everything together and raise the funds, I want to encourage you to trust the Lord, dive in, and see God work!
