Three Steps to Conquer Your Support

by on April 22, 2011 » Add the first comment.

This article is part of a series of letters we send to Royal Servants students each spring. The letters are designed to encourage and provide necessary information as they prepare for their upcoming mission trip.

The other day, I noticed the huge magnolia tree outside my living room window was starting to bloom. It is beautiful and just one of many signs that spring is here. This means there is just under three months left until you pack up your box; walk on an airplane; and fly to Chicago, Illinois for the summer of a lifetime. Are you getting excited? Good!

But you’re not stepping on that plane for another three months. In the meantime, you have to prepare for the summer spiritually and financially. These next few months are focused on assembling a support team. Raising support can be a challenge, so I made a list of the top three things to remember when conquering this challenge!

1. Don’t forget the money comes from God—not people

Your heavenly Father creates and owns everything in this world and the universe. He provides each person with their daily needs. Motivating people to support you, He alone will provide your finances. Be in prayer each day, asking God to provide, and then have faith that He will do so!

2. Make the phone calls

In the support-raising kit we suggest you call everyone you mail a letter. It is probably the hardest step; but it is the most important. Taking the time to call a potential supporter shows them that you respect them! It gives them an opportunity to get to know you better and to ask any questions they may have. It is an important personal connection. They will remember you above the other support letters they receive because you took the time to talk with them.

3. Thank your supporters and keep them informed

The day you notice someone supported you, tell them “thank you!” You can call them (one extra step) and send them a hand-written note. They have sacrificed for you, so it is imperative that you acknowledge how they have blessed you! Your communication does not end at the “thank you.” It is just the beginning! Keep them informed over the next few months about what God is doing in your life and the lives of the people overseas. Send them an update letter three more times: right before you leave, during the summer, and after you return home. They want to know how God is working!

With God’s help, you can conquer the challenge of raising support.

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory.”  —Ephesians 3:20-21
