Uganda Team 2019

When first getting into a new environment, a new culture, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. We don’t naturally adapt to every situation easily, so we begin each year taking a small step into the overwhelming so we can fully see the beauty of a new culture, a new normal.

The Uganda team had a chance, after some much needed rest from our travel day, to walk the streets of their new neighborhood. We asked them to engage their 5 senses, to get familiar with their surroundings in hope to acclimate them to this beautiful country.

It was such a joy to sit down at the end of our excursion and listen to all that they saw, smelled, tasted, heard, and all they felt walking along the busy streets of Kampala.

What did you see?

Lots of cars and motorcycle, street vendors, the rough roads, the children who were so excited to see them, grilled corn, fresh chicken being cooked over a fire on the side of the road.

What did you smell?

The overwhelming stench of petrol from the cars mixed with fresh meat being grilled. Fresh produce in the market, along with the fresh sewage in the trenches

What did you taste?

The supermarket was filled with students trying to define/guess what type of cookies, chocolate bars, ice cream, and I can tell you that not one selection was a disappointment.

What did you hear?

Traffic. Lots of honking and beeping, mixed chatter of Lugandan as we walked past. Heard Ugandans love for music blaring in kiosks around the city circle.

What did you feel?

Still a bit undecided and uneasy about crossing the street, but being exposed to this new culture was also exciting! There’s so much left to explore and can’t wait for more opportunities this summer!

What an evening for the books!!

Our students are doing a phenomenal job. Jet lag isn’t easy, newness and change don’t come naturally, but we have so much confidence in them and what the Lord will be doing this summer in and through this experience!

Thank you for all your prayers for safe travel! Pray our transition into ministry goes just as smoothly!!

Also, dear friends, the WiFi issue is real. Where we are in Africa we have low connectivity. We will continue to try to communicate as much as possible, though. We appreciate your patience.
