Disconnection

The following post is a part of our PreSummer Letters, a series designed to encourage and equip you for your Royal Servants Mission Trip. This is
Royal Servants 2021
of 13.

Have you ever bumped into something because you were looking at your phone and weren’t paying attention to where you were walking? Or even fallen into the fountain at your local mall, providing free entertainment for those around you?

I know I have.  (Not the fountain bit, just the other thing.)

We live in world that looks down more than any other time in history.  What is the problem with constantly looking down, you say? Aside from increased neck pain and chiropractic appointments, the answer is simple: when we constantly look down, we narrow our point of view, and, ultimately, we miss out on more than we realize.

This summer you will unplug from technology, cut it out cold turkey. Yes, this means saying sayonara to your phones, iPods, iPads, iWhateverelseyouhave, etc.  For some, this can be a difficult thing to do. Our world is now built around our technology and the constant connectivity that comes with this digital age.

However this summer we want to challenge you to see unplugging from technology not as a sacrifice, but rather as an opportunity.

An opportunity to look up instead of down, and take in all the beauty that God has spoiled this world with.

An opportunity to go simple and discover the richness of life when we aren’t constantly weighed down with the expectations of having to constantly connect online.

An opportunity to be present with people, without distractions, and engage in the fullness of relationships.

And, perhaps most importantly, an opportunity to take a break from the crazy, competitive, harsh, and judgmental world of social media.

I, for one, cannot wait to unplug this summer. It has always had a refreshing and calming effect on my mind and my soul. So, worry not about your phone and the internet, it will be waiting for you when you return. In the meantime, let’s enjoy this amazing world God has created together in old-school, unplugged, and disconnected fashion!
